Get your ducts in shape!

rubber duckThe ductwork in your home is easily forgotten, but it has a major impact on how well your HVAC system works, as well as the air quality in your New Jersey home. If you’ve been noticing more dust in your home lately, or the A/C isn’t cooling as efficiently as it used to, it’s time to take a look at your ducts. Here are a few tips on what to look for:

Make sure your ductwork is sealed. Sealed ductwork keeps dust and other foreign contaminants out of the ducts, cool air from your air conditioner in, and allows you to have better control over your home’s heat retention and loss. If your ducts aren’t sealed, that means that part of the air that you’re paying to cool in the summer or heat in the winter may escape into the non-living spaces of your house, which drives up your energy bills without benefit. Even worse, it could allow dirty, unfiltered air to be pulled into your system and distributed into the living spaces as air you breathe.

The first places to check for leaks are the air supply and return vents; seal any leaks with metal-backed tape or mastic sealant. If you aren’t sure how to go about this, you can always have a professional come to inspect and repair your ducts.

Make sure your ductwork is clean. Inspecting your ducts for damage or necessary cleaning is also important, because they can get dirty and dusty over time, especially if there are problems with your HVAC air filtration system. The ductwork may also attract or accumulate mold or bacteria that are bad for respiratory health. In worst-case scenarios, small vermin such as bugs, mice or bats can get into your home’s ducts, causing an odor and health risk.

If you see any major issues such as dust blowing out of registers, evidence of insect or vermin infestation, or mold, call in a professional for a skilled duct inspection and possibly cleaning. The technicians can test for leaks and repair any they find.
