Duct Systems: Why they’re important to maintain

Scan copyWhat are duct systems?

Also referred to as ductwork, duct systems are used to control and distribute airflow to different areas of your home. Duct systems are usually made out of insulated metal pipes or flexible tubes and are essential to living in a comfortable and cost-effective home.

How does a duct system work?

Air distribution systems, or duct systems, are in floors, ceilings and/or walls depending on the design of your home. Return ducts carry the air from your living space to the furnace or air conditioner to be filtered, heated, cooled, and dehumidified and then supply ducts deliver the conditioned air to different areas of your home where it’s distributed through vents.

Why do I need to have my duct system checked?

In most homes ducts are located in attics or crawl spaces, which usually contain dust, harmful materials such as fiberglass, and sometimes organic material left by rodents. Attics and crawl spaces also experience extreme temperatures that may reach above 130F in the summer or lower than 30F in the winter. To ensure the most efficient operation of your unit and more importantly, the best quality of air for you and your family, it’s vital that the ducts in your home be correctly sized, properly insulated, and free of leaks or holes. If any of the above conditions exist, you could be paying twice as much in utility bills to heat or cool your home.  In addition, your indoor air quality could be compromised.

What are the benefits of having a properly designed and installed duct system?

Comfort: You will be able to see and feel the difference of a fully functional duct system. Undersized ducts can prevent air from circulating to the proper areas of your home, which can cause annoying hot and cold spots. Leaking ducts pull humid air from attics and crawl spaces, making it more difficult to remain comfortable at a reasonable thermostat setting.

Heathy and Safety: If the duct system in your home is not properly sealed and ventilated, your indoor air quality could suffer. Harmful allergens, organic materials, and synthetic fibers can easily enter the home through these openings and affect your health. Indoor air quality could also be negatively affected if your main air sources are located in unfinished basements, crawlspaces or other areas that may contain mold, mildew, animal droppings, insects, or unhealthy gases. If your ductwork is properly installed and sealed, your indoor air quality will improve drastically, which will impact the health and safety of everyone in the home.

Lower Expenses: Depending on the design of your home and the efficiency of your air conditioner and furnace, you could spend anywhere from 30% to 50% of your utility bills on staying comfortable.  If your duct system is properly sized, installed, insulated and sealed, you could decrease energy waste of your heating and cooling system by up to 40%.

Can I check my duct system?

If you’re having higher than average utility bills, you feel uncomfortable in your home or allergies and respiratory issues worsen, you could have undersized or leaky ducts that are improperly insulated. Call a Bardi professional for a complete duct analysis, including efficiency and leakage reports and recommendations on how to correct duct problems.
